| Men lose a heartbreaker in last home game of the year |
The Open Men's Futsal team put on a gallant display, but ended up losing in heartbreaking fashion in their final home outing for the season.
The Northern Beaches Breakers are a strong outfit with four Brazilians in their squad, but Uni came out firing and were first on the score-sheet thanks to our very own Brazilian, Marcos Silva. The Breakers equalised almost immediately and the scores were locked at 1-1 at the half.
The second half was a tough physical affair but Uni gave as good as they got. The Breakers went 2-1 up, and once again it was up to Marcos to bring the scores level with a blistering strike.
Uni defended strongly as the minutes wore on. Their keeper, Tudor Vasile, was called on to make a number of key saves to keep Uni in the game. But the pressure told as Uni racked up five fouls for the half, meaning their next one would be a penalty.
It looked like the point was safe with less than a minute remaining. However it was not to be. The Breakers worked a set move from a kick-in and managed to smash the ball home to break Uni hearts.
In the night's other matches, Uni managed a 5-3 win in the Under 12 Boys and came from 3-2 down to win 5-3 in the Under 16 Boys. Despite solid efforts, the other grades all went down. However, it must be remembered that the long weekend meant that many players were away and a number of players were filling-in in higher grades.
