Men's Super League open with a 2-0 win! Men's Super League Teams

Sydney Uni travelled to Arlington Oval for a first round showdown with Stanmore Hawks on a warm and muggy Sunday night.

The 20's, under the new guidance of Earl Gray (aka Luke Gray), got the Club's first point with a solid one all draw. Uni grabbed the lead in the first minute of play with Grant "Happy" Holland latching onto a volley after just 39 seconds. Stanmore in return scored a screamer of their own as both teams went to the sheds even.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the second period. However, late in the second half, young uni pin-up boy Ed Murphy (aka Ed Davis) had his leg broken by a Stanmore challenge. Ed trained the house down in pre-season and gossip was spreading that he was someone to watch out for this year. His presence will be missed, but hopefully he can get on the park as soon as possible and wear the blue and gold again.

In first grade, Uni played some good football on what was a remarkably good Arlington Oval pitch. A soft back pass from Stanmore and some good anticipation from Jacob "Big Bob" Swartzanegga (aka Swartz) was enough for Uni to grab the lead.

Uni was dominating with Gavaghan, Collins and Swartzanegga running rings around their defence. Stanmore then had a man sent off for a straight red card after a vicious challenge on Collins. Uni went to the break 1-0 up.

Uni used the numerical advantage well to keep possession for long periods and to open up the Stanmore defence on several occasions. After a penalty miss and two further penalty calls turned down, we finally grabbed a second after Gavaghan put away a loose ball in the box.

A couple more chances went begging and one shot hit the bar, but Uni were able to hold on for a well deserved victory.

Everyone did their job, and V-bomber, Ace (assist for the second goal) and Greyhound added some extra legs and penetration when they came on.

Congratulations to Glenn Lockhart for a win in his debut game as First Grade coach.

Brad Wiblin (with some editing by Terry Hogan, although I must admit that I still don't have a full list of player nicknames).
